Lazy Summer Days a Danger to Child Health

Summer is the perfect season for family vacations, picnics and games in the yard or at the park. But for this generation of children summer is a time for watching more TV, eating high-calorie snacks, and decreased exercise.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, since the 1970s the percentage of obese children has tripled. This means that among children aged 7 to 11 the rate of overweight children has increased from 6.5 to 18.8 percent. And the time of year when most children gain weight? Summer. Less adult supervision means that children have more access to unhealthy snacks, along with mass advertising encouraging them to eat high-calorie, low-quality foods.

Hollywood reserves some of its biggest blockbusters for the summer months when children are out of school and families have more time on their hands. With all the movies currently showing, how do you know which to see, which to rent, and those to miss? Here’s some insider information…
Among the big chick flicks of all time, Sex and the City: The Movie has to rank among the top 5 most anticipated. If you were a fan of the series, then this movie should be a perfect finale to the TV shows, in which we see if Carrie and Mr. Big finally settle down.

When you’re out in the heat of summer what better to refresh your senses, fight that sweet craving, and help stay slim than a diet soda? The same taste as regular soda, but with fewer calories, less sugar, or in other words a healthier option - or is it?

The Framingham Heart Study conducted to examine the potential link between soda consumption and metabolic syndrome, found some unsettling results. Metabolic syndrome a.k.a. syndrome X is the presence of three plus of the following; high fasting blood sugar levels, excessive waist circumference, high blood pressure, elevated triglyceride levels (blood fats) and low levels of the artery-protecting HDL cholesterol.
