Lazy Summer Days a Danger to Child Health
Monday, August 11th, 2008
Summer is the perfect season for family vacations, picnics and games in the yard or at the park. But for this generation of children summer is a time for watching more TV, eating high-calorie snacks, and decreased exercise.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, since the 1970s the percentage of obese children has tripled. This means that among children aged 7 to 11 the rate of overweight children has increased from 6.5 to 18.8 percent. And the time of year when most children gain weight? Summer. Less adult supervision means that children have more access to unhealthy snacks, along with mass advertising encouraging them to eat high-calorie, low-quality foods.

Bronzed Beauties
Tuesday, August 5th, 2008
We are all becoming aware of how harmful UV rays can be to not only our complexion but also our health. Some experts recommend wearing sunscreen on your face everyday to help prevent wrinkles (90% of which are caused by UV rays). However, this doesn’t been you have to remain pasty white - for those of us who are naturally pale - the whole year round.
Summer more than any other time for the year is perfect for wearing little backless numbers, or at least clothing which bears more skin than usual. So if natural tanning isn’t an option, what does that leave us with? Luckily, there are a number of other more healthy choices. Spray-on tanner are available in most areas, although this can be costly and take up a lot of time. Your other main option is to use a self-tanner. I know everyone has heard horror stories about streaky self-tanning, or maybe you were the unlucky victim, but there are a number of products recommended by cosmologists to achieve a sunless tan.

Having the perfect wedding is something most girls dream of from a very early age. And who better to be by your side on this magical occasion than your best girl-friends? Not only do you want to look and feel your best on this special day, you also want them to look good - after all, those wedding pictures will have a prized position in your home for years to come.
It used to be popular for brides-to-be and their bridesmaid to get manicures, haircuts and other similar beauty treatments together before the wedding. This is all changing with the advent of cheaper and more accepted physical improvement, and more specifically a new trend in wedding preparation - cosmetic surgery for bridesmaids.

A Woman of Science
Tuesday, July 15th, 2008
Women have made great strides in many intellectual fields, but one area celebrated by an ongoing project at Agnes Scott College in Georgia is the field of mathematicians.
One such woman is Dusa McDuff. Born in London in 1945, Professor McDuffy was also the 1991 winner of the Ruth Lyttle Satter prize and Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Growing up in Scotland with her father, a genetics professor, and her architect mother, she knew from an early age that mathematics would be a big part of her life. Since her mother worked outside the home in a time when this was very unusual, Dusa perhaps found a role-model in this professional woman. (more…)

Women and Work – The Struggle Continues
Sunday, April 27th, 2008
Although the gender gap between men and women in society is decreasing, but one area which still needs work is in the workplace. For starters, men still earn more money than women in the same position, and even if both people in a relationship work full-time, the woman is more likely to be responsible for household duties and childcare.

It was once believed that women were happier and felt fulfilled in the home. However, recent research has shown that most women need to experience both pleasure and mastery in their lives to feel happy. Mastery means feeling important and worthwhile, whereas pleasure comes from finding life enjoyable. (more…)

Hot Style for the Summer Months
Saturday, April 5th, 2008
Summer is the perfect time to re-vamp your clothing style and have a big summer clear-out to get rid of all those “maybe…”, “what-if…” and “when I…” outfits. With so many options, creating a wearable summer wardrobe can seem daunting. So, here are a few tips about what’s in and what’s out this summer.
Firstly, if you are planning on spending anytime at the pool or on the beach, you are going to need the perfect swimming costume. This season the cut-out swimsuit is an essential item, re-named ‘the monokini’ because it is a combination of a bikini and swimming costume. This style of suit allows you to cover bits of your body you don’t want to show, while revealing others.

Get Green, Save Money
Sunday, March 30th, 2008
With the price of gas slowing rising this summer, along with global sea levels, it’s time to think green when it comes to transport. Obvious options for reducing your carbon footprint include using public transport, walking or biking. However, these alternatives aren’t always an option for a number of common reasons, such as a busy schedule involving long or multiple trips.
One simple tip to help reduce CO2 emissions is by combining trips. For example, if you need to go grocery shopping, get your hair cut, and take the kids to soccer practice, why not do them all on the same day? Or at least start shopping closer to where you spend time doing other things. (more…)

Diet Soda linked to Syndrome X?
Thursday, March 20th, 2008
When you’re out in the heat of summer what better to refresh your senses, fight that sweet craving, and help stay slim than a diet soda? The same taste as regular soda, but with fewer calories, less sugar, or in other words a healthier option - or is it?

The Framingham Heart Study conducted to examine the potential link between soda consumption and metabolic syndrome, found some unsettling results. Metabolic syndrome a.k.a. syndrome X is the presence of three plus of the following; high fasting blood sugar levels, excessive waist circumference, high blood pressure, elevated triglyceride levels (blood fats) and low levels of the artery-protecting HDL cholesterol.

Unusual Color Inspiration
Thursday, February 28th, 2008
I’m on a home renovation kick right now (when am I not) and I’ve been hunting high and low for color ideas. I came across two awesome articles this morning that I had to share. It’s so refreshing to find good, helpful information - not the same old decorating topics with pictures from the 80’s, but up-to-date, interesting articles and current photos depicting today’s decorating trends. I truly appreciated the practical and smart advice for decorating with color.

Beautiful Small Kitchen Designs & Modern Kitchen Gadgets
Sunday, February 24th, 2008
I just saw the cutest small kitchen design I just HAVE TO HAVE.

Since I am living in a somewhat petite abode, and my kitchen is the gathering spot for conversation, healing, meditating and… cooking, because of all these factors, I want my kitchen to be comfortable, yet functional, which isn’t easy when you have very limited space. Luckily, you have to be creative in these situations (which I love!), and there’s nothing better to get the kitchen design juices flowing like scouring pages of pictures of small kitchen design ideas. I found the kitchen above (I want) at a site called www.ymholiad.com, a site that is dedicated to constantly updating you about kitchens and kitchen related appliances and gadgets, and it also has these wonderful photo galleries for getting all kinds of great ideas for kitchen islands, modern kitchen cabinets, and they reviewed some kitchen design software for you to use for free.

Small Bathroom Remodeling Ideas
Tuesday, April 10th, 2007
Sometimes when a home has a smaller size bathroom people will want to remodel to include more space for their bathroom. There are many small bathroom remodeling ideas that a home owner can choose to do for their smaller bathroom. But before any of the small bathroom remodeling ideas even take form you will need to come up with a plan.

Making a remodeling plan may be very hard for some people and they may choose to just hire a designer and a contractor and be done with the whole process. That works well for many people but there are other home owners who would rather design the new bathroom and also build the new bathroom. Even if these people can not actually build the new bathroom themselves and they may need to hire a contractor they may indeed wish to design the room.

Creating A Rustic Room with Log Home Chinking
Wednesday, April 4th, 2007
I was exploring the internet for some ideas for lodge style decor and found this neat site about log homes which has some really great project ideas to achieve a rustic feel.
You would think that a log cabin site, www.BearfortLodge.com, would be strictly a guy thing but while exploring I came across a rather amusing article where he says that women are better at chinking log homes than men. What a riot. Women Unite! I hadn’t expected to see anything like that so I had to investigate further.
I have always had an appreciation for log cabins - they are so romantic and serene. The natural elements featured in log homes are soothing to the soul and psyche. I would love to create a room that had that same feel.
